A Legacy on the Water
It all began with the vibrant waters of Corio Bay, where passionate sailors first came together to explore the possibilities of the sea. The story of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club officially started in 1859 when a group of local enthusiasts formed what would soon become one of Australia’s most renowned yacht clubs.
Our early days were marked by spirited competition, with local sailors organizing impromptu regattas that laid the foundation for the club’s proud racing tradition. By the turn of the 20th century, the club had established itself as a hub for both local and international sailing, hosting numerous regattas that drew competitors from across the region.
A defining moment in our journey came in 1924 when the club was honored with the Royal Warrant by His Majesty King George V, earning the title of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. This recognition was more than just a name; it symbolized the club’s growing prestige and its commitment to excellence in the sport of sailing.
The following decades saw tremendous growth and development. From the creation of our marina and club rooms to the continuous expansion of our facilities, we’ve always been focused on providing top-tier experiences for our members and the broader community. The construction of our state-of-the-art Sailing Centre, set to open in 2025, is the latest testament to our dedication to nurturing the next generation of sailors and ensuring world-class training environments.
One of our proudest achievements is hosting the iconic Festival of Sails, a tradition that has grown into the largest annual keelboat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere. This event has become a hallmark of our club, attracting thousands of sailors and spectators who come to experience the thrill of competition and the vibrant atmosphere of Corio Bay.
From our humble beginnings to becoming a leader in the sailing community, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club’s journey has been defined by a spirit of innovation, resilience, and a love for the sport. As we look to the future, our commitment to creating unforgettable sailing experiences remains as strong as ever. We invite you to be part of this legacy, as we continue to build on our rich history and sail towards new horizons.
