As the 2024-2025 sailing season kicks off, it’s the perfect time to reflect on one of the vital organizations helping make it all happen—the Royal Geelong Yacht Club Foundation. The RGYC Foundation plays a pivotal role in supporting our sailors, programs, and community outreach, ensuring the sport of sailing continues to thrive for generations to come.
Whether it’s funding training programs, sponsoring key initiatives, or helping send young sailors to represent RGYC overseas, the Foundation has made an incredible impact over the past year—and relies on donations to continue this important work.
What Does the RGYC Foundation Do?
The Foundation raises and manages funds that support key RGYC projects, including:
- Sponsoring the RS21 Keelboat: This one-design yacht has been a game-changer for training, development, and racing at the club. It is an essential tool in fostering new talent and upskilling existing sailors.
- Supporting Sailors on the Global Stage: The Foundation provided financial assistance to members competing at international events, including the 2024 Cadet World Championships in Plymouth, UK. Thanks to this support, Josh Garner and Jack Benyan won the World Championship, marking another proud moment for RGYC.
- Youth Development Programs: Scholarships and financial aid ensure young sailors have access to top-level coaching and opportunities to reach their potential.
- Community Outreach: The Foundation funds initiatives designed to break down barriers and make sailing accessible to everyone in the Geelong region.
RGYC Foundation Robbie Miller Trophy
As part of the 2024-2025 Twilight Race Series, the Foundation is proud to present the Robbie Miller Trophy—a series of three races woven into the Twilight Sailing calendar. This sub-series celebrates both the legacy of Robbie Miller and the Foundation’s commitment to the club’s future.
- Twilight Race 9 / RGYC Foundation Race 1 – 4th December 2024
- Twilight Race 12 / RGYC Foundation Race 2 – 5th February 2025
- Twilight Race 17 / RGYC Foundation Race 3 – 12th March 2025
With each race, sailors not only compete for the prestigious trophy but also highlight the importance of community support through the Foundation’s work.
Upcoming Plans: Building a Legacy
Looking to the future, the RGYC Foundation continues to aim high. Their plans include:
- Help fund the 2025 Cadet World Championship Team in Argentina
- Supporting the Marine Education Complex, designed to teach the joys and benefits of sailing to children and adults
- Growing Membership & Resources: Encouraging members to join and contribute to the Foundation, helping to sustain and develop sailing in the Geelong region
