Long-time RGYC member Rod Hagebols has once again proven his exceptional coaching abilities, helping guide Team Hoss Racing to victory at the 2024 Star Class World Championship in San Diego, USA.

The star-studded team, led by John Kostecki (Helm) and Austin Sperry (Crew), with coaches Marc Pickel and Rod Hagebols, and Dr. Chris Herrera as the team’s physiotherapist, secured a hard-fought win by just one point in a competitive 65-boat fleet.

For those unfamiliar with the sailing world, Kostecki is one of the most decorated sailors of our time, having won an Olympic silver medal in the Soling Class, the Volvo Ocean Race (Illbruck), and the America’s Cup (Oracle Racing), along with multiple World Championships in the Farr40, TP52, and Melges 24 classes. Sperry, an Olympic Star class sailor who competed in Beijing 2008, has also taken home victories in prestigious regattas such as the Bacardi Cup.

Rod first met Austin Sperry 25 years ago while living in San Francisco. The two quickly became good friends, and Rod began coaching Austin’s Star team, which led to their selection for the 2008 Olympics for Team USA. Fast forward to 2024, and Austin signed Rod up once again to help secure the Star Class World Championship. Over the last year, Rod’s coaching involved frequent travel between the US and Australia for training camps and regattas, working closely with the team to fine-tune their strategy, sail, and rig development.

In a nail-biting final race, where six boats had a shot at victory, Team Hoss Racing clinched the championship by a single point—without winning a race. This incredible feat speaks volumes about the team’s preparation, consistency, and determination.

Rod shared his appreciation for being part of such a high-caliber team, thanking his wife Mandy for her support throughout the many months of travel. The victory has meant a lot to him personally and professionally, reinforcing the power of teamwork and persistence.

Looking ahead, Kostecki and Sperry have purchased Chris Manton’s Tiger Etchells 1514, and the team will begin preparations for the Royal Brighton Yacht Club Etchells World Championship in January 2025, training alongside Chris Manton, Nigel Abbott, and Rod himself.
