Annual Royal Geelong Yacht Club Senior Members Dinghy Race

This past Saturday, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club hosted its annual OTB fundraising event, a long-standing tradition that brings together our community of sailors for an exciting race with a purpose. This event supports our junior sailors competing overseas and offers a unique opportunity for members over the age of 21 to skipper one of the cadets, with the usual cadet skippers as their crew.

The event kicked off with a boat draw raffle at the end of the summer season, with tickets sold for $10 each. Winners were announced at the OTB presentation night, and three boats were put back into the final chance auction, held at the Keelboat presentation night, raising an impressive additional $2,900 on top of the $900 from ticket sales.

Fifteen boats lined up at the start line at 1 PM, sailing under a lovely 8-10 knot southerly breeze. The skippers’ experience varied greatly, from former cadet sailors with national and state championships under their belts to renowned keelboat sailors and even some new sailors stepping into a cadet dinghy for the first time.

The race was a thrilling spectacle, with a nail-biting finish that saw Clare McAuliffe narrowly edging out Tim Davis by just one second. The fleet was filled with fierce competition and friendly rivalries, with some sailors just hoping to stay dry—though not everyone succeeded, as GP Macolino demonstrated with a brief capsize at the first mark.
