Tackers Intro is our ‘Have a Go’ for kids.
It is a short, fun taster session for kids aged 7–12. It’s games-based, safe, and designed to build confidence on the water without any pressure. No experience needed and we provide the boats and gear.
This is the best first step into sailing. Kids will get comfortable in a lifejacket, learn the basics through games, and head out for a supported sail with our instructors. It’s relaxed, friendly, and all about having fun while building confidence.
Skills You’ll Learn:
✔ Basic safety and water confidence
✔ How to steer and turn the boat
✔ Simple sail control
✔ Working with a buddy
✔ Big smiles on the water
Plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can sign in, meet your child, and get them settled. After that, arriving a few minutes before the start time is perfect.
We sail in light rain or breeze, but safety comes first. If it is not suitable to go on the water, we switch to fun shore-based activities (knots, rigging, games) until it improves, and we pause on-water activity for lightning.
Yes, absolutely. The best viewing spot can change depending on wind and session activities, so just ask the instructor where to set up for the day.
Yes. Drop off, enjoy your morning, and come back on time for pick-up.
For safety, kids need to be signed out at the end of the session by a parent or authorised adult. If someone else is collecting your child, just tell the instructor at drop-off.
After Tackers, kids can keep sailing in a way that suits them. Some love relaxed social sailing and skill development, others want coached sessions to keep improving. Either way, we’ll point you to the best next step at RGYC based on your child’s confidence and interest.
Tackers is designed for kids aged 7 to 12 years. If your child is younger, Little Tackers is a shorter, games-based option for ages 4 to 6.
No experience needed at all. Tackers is built as a true beginner program, with games-based learning and heaps of support so kids feel safe and confident from day one.
It helps if kids have basic water confidence, but they will be wearing an approved lifejacket whenever they are on the water. If you are unsure about your child’s confidence, chat to us first and we will guide you on the best starting point.
Bring a drink bottle, hat, snack, towel, and a change of clothes. Closed-toe shoes that can get wet are ideal, and if you have them, a spray jacket or wetsuit is great on cooler days.
