RGYC recently hosted another brilliant Fireball training weekend ahead of the 2024 Fireball World Championships on February 5th – 16th 2024!
Local sailors were joined by visitors from South Australia, NSW, and other parts of Victoria hoping to gain some invaluable experience on Geelong waters ahead of the championships in 2024.
Participants were treated with strong winds on Saturday and light winds on Sunday, an example of the sometimes testing weather conditions presented by Corio Bay.
The strong winds proved testing for Saturday’s sprint series reaching highs of 20 knots! only 4 fireballs completed the scheduled races of the day, with the rest of the fleet opting for boat and body preservation over racing.
Sunday saw completely different weather conditions with much lighter winds of variable directions for a practice session on gate and line starts. The challenging winds made for interesting start conditions with Chris Jones who was behind the wheel of the rib having to move the windward mark at least 16 times!
Despite the weather challenges, all participants were able to practice their skills and learn from the sessions. RGYC as the host of the 2024 Fireball World championships continues to facilitate learning and practice opportunities for fireball sailors preparing for the championships in February next year!
