Last Friday evening the 21st of June, members gathered in the clubhouse to farewell our junior sailors heading overseas to compete in the International Cadet World Championship at Plymouth UK.
This year RGYC had the top three qualifying boats at the National Championship in Hobart at Christmas, which serves as the selection series of ten boats that make up the team. So as a club, we are immensely proud of this achievement and congratulations to.
Josh Garner and Jack Benyan – Ringo Aus 10072
Cate McCoy and Will Garner- Mustang Sally Aus 9527
Will Farnell and Louis Davis – Assassin Aus 9560
These three boats have been working very hard in the last few months to really hone their skills and enhance their prospects and are now taking a little mini break to freshen up for the challenges ahead. But the reality is that the groundwork of this representation is multiple seasons putting in the hours with great support from the parental group and all the Off the Beach group at RGYC.
Ben Garner, elder brother of Josh and Will and a very successful recent Cadet Sailor, is also accompanying the team as assistant coach.
Their campaign begins with meeting up at host club, the Mountbatten Centre in Plymouth on the 24th of July. Then they will be competing in the UK Nationals as a warmup before the Worlds commence in early August. Their focus is on being the best ambassadors of their club and country and to give a good account of themselves on and off the water.
The sailors wish me to pass on their appreciation of the RGYC board, the Foundation and the members of the RGYC community. The amount of support has been amazing and truly humbling.
