Adelaide Sailing Club played host to the largest sailing event ever staged in the city, with over 300 boats competing across the ILCA7, ILCA6, and ILCA4 divisions at the 2024 Oceania & Australian ILCA Open & Youth Championships. The spotlight shone brightly on the ILCA 6 class, where Riley Cantwell showcased his sailing prowess, securing a commendable 7th place overall and an impressive 2nd place in the Under-17 category. Mark Tonner-Joyce also left his mark on the competition, finishing 15th overall in the fiercely contested ILCA 6 class.
In the ILCA7 division, the competition was nothing short of fierce, attracting the world’s best Olympic campaigners preparing for the upcoming Open Worlds. Among them was Finn Buckley, whose exceptional performance saw him progress to the Silver Fleet Finals through the intense round-robin races. The ILCA7 fleet witnessed the crowning of Matt Wearn, the Australian Olympic Champion, as the event winner, solidifying the division’s reputation as the toughest of fleets.
Aiden Simmons, hailing from Indented Head, emerged victorious in the ILCA4 division, securing his second consecutive championship win. Simmons’ triumph propels him into the ILCA6 division over the next year, marking a significant milestone in his sailing journey. As the championship concluded, the achievements of these sailors echoed not only across the waters of Adelaide but also resonated with the broader sailing community, inspiring a new wave of enthusiasts and reaffirming the enduring spirit of competition and camaraderie within the world of ILCA sailing.
