The Barwon Sports Academy (BSA) Awards Night, held on Monday, December 2nd, at GMHBA Stadium, was a night of celebration, inspiration, and pride for the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Hosted by sports commentator Tom King, the event featured motivational addresses by guest speakers Maddison Browne, former Netball Diamond, and Blake Edwards, captain of the Australian Water Polo Sharks.

RGYC was well represented with a table of ten, including Commodore Paul Buchholz, proudly supporting our young athletes. And the club didn’t leave empty-handed—we took home an impressive share of awards on the night.

Josh Garner’s stellar year was celebrated in style as he claimed both the Sports Ambassador Award and the Sailing Award, a testament to his exceptional achievements, including his World Championship victory in the Cadet class in Plymouth, UK. Josh didn’t stop there, earning the prestigious Lee Troop Award for Excellence, the highest accolade at the BSA Awards, for the second year running—a feat previously achieved by Evie McDonald in 2024. In his gracious acceptance speech, Josh acknowledged the unwavering support of RGYC, solidifying his role as a true ambassador for the club.

Charlie Stephens also shone brightly, taking home the Sailing Development Award. Charlie’s recent success, including his recent first-place finish in the International Cadet class at the Sail Sandy Regatta, highlights his exceptional talent and promising future.

A special mention goes to Tony Bull, head coach for sailing at RGYC, BSA, and Geelong Grammar. Known not only for developing outstanding athletes but also for shaping great individuals, Tony’s contribution was celebrated by all in attendance.

Congratulations to Josh, Charlie, and Tony on these outstanding achievements. The RGYC community couldn’t be prouder!
