If you’ve been at the Club on a Wednesday evening, you’ve probably noticed the Hanse 430 E setting sail as part of the Strength in Sailing program. This incredible initiative, a collaboration between RGYC and Strong Brother Strong Sister, gives Aboriginal youth the opportunity to experience the joys of sailing while building confidence and skills that go far beyond the water.

This week, we caught up with program volunteer Bill Chittenden to hear about how this season is tracking. Bill shared his pride in seeing the participants not only learn new skills but also grow into confident and competent sailors. “They start the program with little or no sailing experience, and by the end of the season, they’ve become confident with sail trimming, helming, and more,” Bill explained. “What’s most important is that the kids and crew have fun. It’s amazing to watch their confidence and enthusiasm grow week by week.”

A cornerstone of the program is its partnerships, including Strong Brother Strong Sister, who not only source and support the youth involved but also manage logistics to ensure the program runs seamlessly. Christine Couzens M.P., a long-time advocate for the program, has also played a vital role in its success. Additionally, MUSTO has been a key supporter, generously supplying gloves and bags to the participants for the past three years.

“The Hanse 430 E has been a fantastic addition,” Bill explained. “Its design makes it a safe and approachable platform for learning, with features like a self-tacking headsail and electric winches. It’s ideal for introducing newcomers to the sport.”

As the Strength in Sailing program sets its sails for another season, it remains a shining example of RGYC’s commitment to making sailing more accessible for everyone. The program not only provides unforgettable experiences for the youth involved but also reflects the Club’s broader mission to foster inclusivity and inspire future generations of sailors.

So, next time you’re on the water on a Wednesday night, make sure to give them a wave—it’s a program worth celebrating.
